How to hear a numbers station tonight

Reading about numbers stations is one thing. Hearing a voice read digits into a country you are not in, live, at three in the morning, is another. Here is how to do it tonight. The zero-equipment route

Use somebody else's radio. WebSDR and KiwiSDR receivers are shortwave sets connected to the internet, run by enthusiasts, that anyone can tune from a browser. There are hundreds worldwide and they are free.

This matters more than convenience. Shortwave reception depends on where the antenna is. A station beamed at the Middle East may be inaudible from Spain and perfectly clear from a receiver in Poland. With WebSDRs you simply choose a receiver near where the signal is going.

Pick one geographically sensible for your target, set the mode to USB, and type in the frequency. What to try first

The Buzzer — 4625 kHz USB, any time. The safest first attempt: it is always transmitting. You will hear a buzz repeating around twenty-five times a minute. That is the station. Use a receiver in Russia, Finland or the Baltics.

HM01 — Cuban, various frequencies, mostly overnight in Europe. A mix of spoken Spanish digits and digital data bursts. Best from receivers in North America or the Caribbean.

V32 — 7842 kHz USB, 02:00 and 18:00 UTC. The Persian station that appeared in February 2026. The 18:00 transmission repeats the 02:00 one exactly, so either window will do.

Everything in this database is stored in UTC for exactly this reason. Numbers station schedules are absolute — the operator does not care what time zone you are in, and neither does the ionosphere. Why the time of day decides everything

Shortwave travels by refracting off the ionosphere, and the ionosphere changes completely between day and night. As a rough guide: Below about 10 MHz — best at night. Daytime absorption in the D layer eats these frequencies. Above about 14 MHz — best in daylight, along paths that are sunlit end to end. Around dawn and dusk — the grey line. Both ends of a path are in twilight, absorption drops, and signals appear that are impossible at any other hour.

An RTL-SDR dongle with an upconverter, or a dedicated receiver such as an Airspy HF+ or Malachite, will get you onto real hardware for a modest sum. The receiver is rarely the limit, though — the antenna is. A long wire outdoors, away from the house, will beat an expensive radio with a short wire indoors every single time. Switching-mode power supplies, LED lighting and cheap USB chargers are the enemy; most urban noise floors are self-inflicted. Logging what you hear

If you get something, write down: frequency, time in UTC, mode, and what you heard. A signal report helps — SINPO, or just an S-meter reading.

That is the format the monitoring community has used for decades, and it is why anyone knew V32 existed within sixty seconds of its first transmission. These stations are not tracked by institutions. They are tracked by people writing down what they heard.
