Twenty minutes at dawn when the world opens up

There is a line moving across the Earth at about 1,600 kilometres an hour, and radio behaves strangely along it.
It is the terminator — the boundary between day and night — and the band of twilight either side of it is what operators call the grey line. For a short period as it passes over you, signals on the lowest amateur bands travel distances that are simply not available at any other time. Two layers with different habits
The ionosphere is not one thing. The part that matters here is two of them.
The D layer sits lowest and it absorbs. It is what makes 160 and 80 metres useless for distance in daylight — signals go up, get eaten, and never come back. It exists only while the sun is shining on it, and it forms and dissolves quickly.
The F layer sits much higher and it reflects. It is what actually returns your signal to Earth, and it persists through the night. The window
At dusk, the D layer disappears faster than the F layer does. At dawn, the F layer is still there and the D layer has not rebuilt yet.
Either way you get, briefly, the useful half without the destructive half: a reflector overhead and nothing underneath to absorb the signal on its way up.
That window is fifteen to forty-five minutes, and on 160 metres it can be as short as a few minutes. On paths where both ends are in twilight simultaneously it is better still, because the whole route is running through the same favourable condition. What it is actually good for
Distance on frequencies that have no business doing distance.
It is how 160 metres does intercontinental work at all. It is why an operator will get up at an unreasonable hour to catch a specific path that only exists while the sun is coming up over both ends. And it applies to shortwave listening exactly as much as to transmitting — the same window opens for anybody with a receiver. How to use it tonight
Work out your sunrise and sunset in UTC, and be at the radio fifteen minutes before.
Then listen at the bottom end of the band and be patient. What you are waiting for is a station that was not there ten minutes ago arriving at a strength that does not make sense for the frequency, holding for a while, and fading out as the line moves on.
Any grey line map will show you where the terminator is and which parts of the world are sharing your twilight at that moment. Those are the directions worth pointing at.
The window does not wait, and it does not come back until tomorrow. That is most of the appeal.
